My novel is finally at a place where I can start submitting it to agents, publishers and of course some literary contests. Along the way, I’ve learned how to write a query letter. I think I got it at version 4.1.
I’m still struggling with the synopsis part – why? Well, in a way I find a synopsis to be similar to cliff notes. I was never a fan of cliff notes. They tend to rob the readers of being fully immersed in a story. Yet, it has to be done. It’s part of the process. I’ve done some research and I’m starting to put one together. Once done, I will post it.
Below is my query letter – what do you think?

Dear Ms./Mr:
I’m seeking representation for my novel, The Scale. The first book of the Martha’s Way series. Given your interest in women’s fiction and romance, it might be a good fit for your list. My novel is a women’s fiction with strong contemporary romance qualities set in Martha’s Vineyard.
Twenty-seven year old, African-American, Minka Greene has to endure watching her twin sister marry the man she loves. Her weight is up, and her confidence is down. Not exactly the ideal time to meet the real man of her dreams.
The Scale opens in Martha’s Vineyard with Minka dragging herself out of bed to attend Keely and Blake’s engagement party at Martha’s Way, the beautiful inn owned and operated by the tall, blond, tattooed man with the piercing blue eyes. It just so happens Jason Montgomery is also Blake’s childhood friend and best man.
When she wakes up naked in Jason’s bed after a night of passion, the Vineyard confirmed bachelor struggling with his own demons and the woman filled with self-doubt and pining for another man are joined in an experience that will change their lives.
Complete at 94,200 words, The Scale tells the story of two pivotal weeks during Minka’s life as she struggles to accept what is and relinquishes what she thought she wanted in order to mend old relationships and make new ones. This novel explores relevant issues for women – anxiety about weight, self-acceptance, and sibling comparisons.
A little bit about me. I have a degree in Business Administration and have been working as a Project Manager for an Information Technology firm. My favorite place to be is anywhere I can be with my two boys and my husband. Although I do love the Vineyard, hence why its used as the setting for this series. When I’m not with my family or writing, I can be found working on my gardening or knitting skills. I also enjoy jogging and hiking.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Best regards,
Mika Jolie
love & kisses,
