Jack Walker’s Favorite Thanksgiving Recipe

The back office at the Hauser home has been converted into a mini-video recording studio for each member of the Hauser family along with two special guests to share one of their favorite Thanksgiving recipes other than the pecan pie.

Hauser Family File: Jack Walker is not related to anyone in the Hauser Family. Due to his brother’s death he has returned to Vintage Estates to assist his brother’s widow in running the family business. He meets Lauren Hauser at Tibor’s Pecan farm.

“Roll the tape.”

Jack treks into the room and sits down on the couch. He takes in a deep breath.

“My favorite recipe other than the pie, is my Aunt Minnie’s hot and buttery rolls.” Jack glances down at the floor.

His icy blue eyes flicker and focus back on the camera. “After my parents died, my Aunt Minnie came to stay with my brother Lewis and me. Every night for dinner she made these rolls.” Jack nods his head.

“I never knew how much effort it took to make these delicious rolls until about six months after they had passed away. I asked if I could make them with her.” He bites his lower lip. “I think that’s the moment I really fell in love with the idea of cooking and baking in general. Here’s the recipe.” Jack holds up a small three by five beige notecard.

Buttery Rolls

2 ½ cups all-purpose flour                           2 tablespoons sugar

1 package (1/4 ounce) quick-rise yeast       ½ teaspoon salt

¾ cup warm water                                        2 tablespoons 4 teaspoons melted butter

¾ cup shredded cheddar cheese                2 teaspoons honey

1/8 teaspoon garlic salt
In a large bowl, combine 1-1/2 cups flour, sugar, yeast and salt. Add water and 2 tablespoons butter; beat on medium speed for 3 minutes or until smooth. Stir in cheese and enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.

Turn onto a lightly floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 4-6 minutes. Cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Divide into 13 pieces. Shape each into a ball. Place in a greased 9-in. round baking pan. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 375°. Bake 11-14 minutes or until lightly browned. Combine honey, garlic salt and remaining butter; brush over rolls. Remove from pan to wire rack. Yield: 13 rolls.
